FAQs

1. How many beehives should a beginner start with?

Starting with two hives can make learning easier because you can compare colony development and better understand differences between your bees. However, one hive is also an option for beginners with limited space, time, or budget.

2. What should I expect during my first year of beekeeping?

Your first year is primarily about learning how to manage a colony, understand its seasonal rhythm, and keep the bees healthy. A new colony may spend much of its first year building population and comb rather than producing surplus honey.

3. How often should I inspect my beehives?

New colonies generally benefit from regular inspections while they become established. Carolina Honeybees recommends checking new colonies every 10–14 days during the summer, while established colonies may only need monthly inspections.

4. What should I look for during a hive inspection?

Check for evidence of a healthy queen, eggs and brood, a good brood pattern, stored pollen and honey, active bees, and signs of pests or disease. You do not necessarily need to see the queen herself if you can find evidence that she is present and laying.

5. What equipment do I need to start beekeeping?

Basic equipment includes a beehive, protective clothing, a bee smoker, and a hive tool. Beginners should also learn proper hive inspection techniques and prepare their equipment before the bees arrive.
